? how did that play out? how did that discussion go? did president obama say either you come up with a deal or put my deal to a vote? because we're not going to come together ideologically at that meeting. >> no. and they're not unrealistic about that. the president lays out what he thinks he can get done, which is this 250 and, you know, whether there's wiggle room up to 400 and now that might not even happen, maybe, is what kevin is saying. and then unemployment benefits, an extension of that, and, you know, patch the amt. these are things he wants. and, you know, senator mcconnell, what can you do is, you know, the understanding of how this plays out. and senator mcconnell -- you know, they say, listen, we're going to take it up between us. let senators reid and mcconnell really resolve this together. and those are, as i said, two men who know how to work things out. speaker boehner stepping out of it at this point because he has not been able to produce a deal to date and it's not on his shoulders. and nancy pelosi is the one who's going to have to car ray lot of this weight

president obama doesn't propose serious budgets. >> sean: senator toomey, how is this going to work because speaker boehner tried to pass a plan b. the president in the meeting today is insisting on raising taxes on small business and individuals over $250,000. but yet he wants to work through the senate. how how does this get through the house when they couldn't get it with a million dollars limit? >> well, first -- >> sean: or a million dollars cutoff. >> i don't know where the threshold might end up in the negotiations. my suspicion is that is perhaps one of the topics under discussion and second point i would make i think a part of the reticence is because they were afraid what would happen when it got over to the senate. if there is a reason package that can attract a lot of republican support in the senate then i think the prospect in the house improves dramatically. all depends on what is in the deal but that is a scenario that i think is plausible. >> sean: gentlemen, thank you both for spending time. happy new year and appreciate you being with us. >> happy new year, sean. >> sean:

it? we keep talking about the meetings betweenby ma and boehner, one of which hasn't happened in a few days but it really isn't a deal between obama and boehner. those two guys say what they want, boehner goes back to his caucus and can't get a deal. >> that's why a bipartisan majority is absolutely necessary, if the senate bill is brought to a vote on the house floor, it will be passed by a majority of democrats and some republicans, but the speaker wasted last week on a bill that had no prospect of success, in fact never even was brought to a vote and now we're down to the last few days. the deal to extend these tax cuts on everyone's first $250,000 of income, remember it's benefits people who earn more than $250,000 because it extends tax cuts on their first $250,000. so somebody earning $300,000 or $350,000 in connecticut will benefit from it. >> senator, ron brownstein wants to ask a question. >> let me play devil's advocate when the tax cuts were passed in 2001 virtually every democrat in the house and senate voted against them. why do you think it's appropriate to perma
